Walking into the bar of Philadelphia’s Omni Hotel, we encounter a giant of a man, Pasquale Scaturro.

In April of last year, in the middle of the fast, brown Nile River, twisting through a dark inner gorge, he was hanging onto his life by a rope, kicking to stay afloat in cold water, his stout arms stretched to their limits.
While a skein of currents blasted about his chest, he gripped with one hand the end of a 75-foot-long yellow safety rope anchored to a basalt boulder upstream.
